Dayê Miro by Rojda
‘Dayê Miro‘ is a song by Rojda, a famous Kurdish singer-songwriter from Northern-Kurdistan (Eastern Turkey). The song is about the beautiful city of Mêrdîn (Mardin), famous for its magnificent and meticulously carved limestone architecture. Mêrdîn is an ancient city in North-Kurdistan; perched against a hill, it has been a strategic town overlooking to the vast Mesopotamian Plains for thousands of years.
Mêrdîn is a culturally, ethnically, and religiously very diverse city. It is perhaps one of the only cities in the Middle-East where Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians, muslims, christians, and Yazidis live side by side in peace. Mêrdîn is famous for its winding alleyways, magnificent religious buildings, and grand mansions. It is, at least architecturally, one of my favourite Kurdish cities, which is why I used this song on my ‘architecture’ page.
Lyrics for and Translation of "Dayê Miro"
(Kurmancî) Kurdish Lyrics for “Dayê Miro”
Dayê, mîro, mîro. Dayê vana mîro.
Dayê, mîro, mîro. Dayê vana mîro.
Ez çûm Mêrdînê, Mêrdîn rengîn e,
Mêrdîn bî qesr û bî qonax e.
Hay lê, lê, lê! Hay lê, lê, lê!
Hat im Mêrdînê, Mêrdîn rengîn e,
Min dil avêtî keçika Mêrdînê.
Hiş û aqilê’m nema di ser da.
Dayê, mîro, mîro. Dayê vana mîro.
Dayê, mîro, mîro. Dayê vana mîro.
English Lyrics of “Dayê Miro” (Mother, the Prince!)
Mother, the prince, the prince. Mother the prince’s house!
Mother, the prince, the prince. Mother the prince’s house!
I went to Mardin, Mardin is so colorful.
Mardin with its big and magnificent houses!
Hay lê, lê, lê! Hay lê, lê, lê!
I arrived in Mardin, colourful Mardin.
I gave my heart to a Mardinni girl.
I can not forget you anymore.
Mother, the prince, the prince. Mother the prince’s house!
